About Yantai |

Origin
|
|
Yantai has a long
history and it is called "Zhifu" in the ancient times. In B.C. 200 years,
Chinese first emperor drew a bow to shoot the fish here, the left site is called
"diao yu tai" ( in Chinese, it means the place where you fish ). In A.D.1398, in
order to defence the enemies from the sea, the government of the Ming Dynasty
built the beacon tower here, from which the city derived her name "Yantai"( in
Chinese, it means the place where smoke is produced to give warning ). In 1861,
Yantai became one of the first opening ports in the modern China. |

Location |
|
Yantai, lying at the
northwest tip of Shandoing Peninsula, is a beautiful coastal city. Bordering the
Yellow Sea ( around 37 ° 24 ‘N and 121° 16’S ), she faces South Korea and Japan
across the sea. Yantai is one of the 14 coastal cities in China opening up to
the outside and she is also a key city in the area circling Bohai Sea developed
by the nation. Besides the shadow mountainous area in the middle, the majority
of terrian is knoll. The plain area accounts for 23%, and the soil is fertile.
There're 7 rivers within the city which run over 300 square meters.Yantai has
pleasant climate, which is not severely cold in winter and not insensely hot in
summer. The average temperature is 12.9℃, the yearly average rainfall is about
790mm and the frost--free period is above 200 days.

Yantai governs 4
districts, 1 county, 7 county-level cities and 1 national level economic &
technology development area, 1 national level import & export processing area
and 97 towns. The whole area of Yantai is 13,7000 square kilometers and the
urban area is 2,436 square kilometers; The total population is 6.485 million and
the urban population is 1.614 million.

Open history

From 1862 to 1930,
about 17 foreign countries set up embassies, banks, churches, schools and the
first post office of China in Yantai, which provided service for more and more
foreign institutions. Now, most of these left sites have been refitted and
opened to visitors all over the world.
